How to Become a CNA in Texas – The Requirements

All the information you need to become a CNA in Texas can be found here – Texas Health and Human Services. This is the official government licensing website and there is a lot of information on how to get CNA certified in Texas and other amazing resources too. To help streamline your research, we have gone through all the requirements and have provided answers to common questions regarding the CNA requirements in Texas.

1) There is NO minimum age requirement, and we have spoken to several schools who have mentioned that there is NO AGE requirement to apply for their CNA training program in Texas. However, the age of 18+ will satisfy many of the requirements in terms of employment, etc. For example, you may have an easier time finding work and/or joining a co-op nurse training program if you are 18+ years old.

2) There is NO minimum education required imposed by the Texas Health and Human Services licensing office. This is clearly stated on their website –

“Neither the federal regulation nor state rule imposes a minimum education requirement for nurse aides.” – hhs.texas.gov

With that said, after researching accredited CNA training programs in Texas, many of these programs do require either the following – have an 8th grade/high school education or pass the school’s placement exam.

3) To become a CNA (certified nursing assistant) in Texas, you MUST successfully complete a state-approved (accredited) CNA training program in Texas. This program MUST cover all NATCEP curriculum requirements: 60 clock hours of classroom training that doesn’t involve direct resident care and 40 clock hours of hands-on resident care in a nursing facility. This MUST also include the following –

16 introductory hours of training in the following areas before direct client contact:

Communication and interpersonal skills
Infection control
Safety and emergency procedures, including the Heimlich maneuver
Promoting residents’ independence
Respecting residents’ rights
Personal care skills
Basic nursing skills
Mental health and social service needs
Care of cognitively impaired residents
Basic restorative services
Residents’ rights

4) After successful completion of the nurse training program, you MUST successfully PASS the competency evaluation program examination. It will take approx four to six weeks to receive your certificate after successfully completing the exam.

5) The Texas Nurse Aide examination is administered through Prometric.

Additional Licensing Information
