Two years later, his father, Preston Thomas Sexton, passed away on Easter Sunday morning. Clarence’s mother, Ruby Lee Sexton, significantly influenced his life as she raised the four children as a single parent, often working multiple jobs. Clarence had to assume the role of a man in the household and take care of his siblings.

When Clarence turned fourteen, he attended the First Baptist Church in Maryville, Tennessee. During a youth choir practice, the director, Don Brakebill, realized that Clarence was not a Christian and took him to meet the pastor. Soon after, Dr. J. William Harbin helped Clarence accept Jesus Christ as his personal Savior. In his first year, Clarence transferred from Maryville High School to Everett High School, where he met Robert Davis, the principal. Upon learning that Clarence’s mother was solely responsible for raising her children, Mr. Davis, a godly Christian man, promised to assist her. It is said that until the end, he did keep his word. His influence greatly impacted Clarence’s life, and years later, Mr. Davis revealed that he prayed for Clarence every day. At Everett High School, Clarence played as the starting halfback on the football team for four years, eventually becoming the team captain. It was also where he met and fell in love with Evelyn Rogers. They tied the knot on February 15, 1967. They began attending Forest Hills Baptist Church, where God worked powerfully in Clarence’s heart.
