PASSAGE #5
“In his first year in office, President Bill Clinton attempted to lift the ban on gays in the military. Instead, Congress fashioned the Military Personnel Eligibility Act of 1993, otherwise known as “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT).” The compromise allowed gays to serve as long as they kept their sexual orientation quiet, and prohibited superiors from asking about it. Since 1993, more than 13,500 service members have been discharged for being gay. In the fall of 2010, a California district judge ruled DADT unconstitutional and ordered an immediate stop to its enforcement. In the winter of 2010, the House and Senate voted on and repealed DADT. On December 22, President Barack Obama signed the policy into law. DADT remains in effect, however, until the Pentagon certifies the military’s readiness on such issues as benefits for gay military families.”
