PASSAGE #4
“Advocates of hybrid vehicles believe that they offer the best short-term solution to some long-term problems. By combining a regular gasoline-powered engine with an electric engine, hybrids cut down on gas consumption and decrease the pollution caused by gasoline engines. These cars help auto makers meet government regulations for fuel efficiency and emissions controls. Some auto makers do not think that hybrids are the answer for the future, but these small cars provide a way for conservation-conscious consumers to do something for the environment. Other auto makers see another benefit to the development process for hybrids. The technology that has gone into creating and refining the dual-powered hybrid will help with the longer-term development of cars powered by hydrogen fuel cells.”
